Natural Herkimer Diamond found in Herkimer County Mine
Herkimer diamonds are rarer than conventional diamonds because they are a unique type of quartz crystal found almost exclusively in Herkimer County, New York, and are naturally double-terminated with faceted surfaces, unlike true diamonds which require cutting and polishing. While their name and appearance may be similar, Herkimer diamonds are a variety of quartz, not a diamond, with a lower hardness (7.5 on the Mohs scale) Still Very Very Hard and will not break.
